June 19 - August 25, 2018
MonDak Heritage Center
120 3rd Ave SE, Sidney, Montana 59270
The MonDak digs into its own collections for the Signs of the Times exhibition, featuring commercial signs of regional businesses hand-painted by artist J. K. Ralston. Ralston painted the signs in the 1930s to help raise funds for a local town hall. The MonDak Historical & Art Society received the signs as a donation in the 1970s and sold some of them for its own fundraising purposes. And now today MDHC preserves and displays them as an important part of local art and history. Join us for this exhibit to enjoy the vintage and retro artwork, reminisce about businesses of a bygone era, and explore the story of the signs and what they represent in the MonDak.
Signs of the Times runs from Tuesday, June 19 through Saturday, August 25. For more information, contact MDHC at (406) 433-3500 or visit mondakheritagecenter.org.

PowWows & Rodeos: Communities at Play
June 5 - September 1, 2018
Explore the PowWows & Rodeos: Communities at Play exhibition by Harry Lee Harpster, Jr., on display at the MonDak Heritage Center June 5 through September 1.
The exhibition features photographs that engage viewers with late 20th-century Native American culture on the northern plains and illustrate the beauty and challenges of reservation life and lands.
The photographs of Native American children and adults featured in this exhibition were taken during visits to powwows and rodeos between 1979 and 2001.
Harpster captured encampment scenes, preparations for parades and dancing, booths and vendors, spectators, and competitors.
Sponsored by the Hockaday Museum of Art, the exhibit comes to the MonDak via the Montana Art Gallery Director’s Association.

A long day, getting longer, getting late. Hundreds of miles traveled, dozens of people encountered. Solitary relief was planned. The weather had other ideas. Plans for a grasslands hike were washed out by afternoon rain. It promised to wrap the explorers in a wet...
Monotony of Color? Not! Western North Dakota can seem a bit stark at times, at the very least monochromatic, to the eyes of travelers who cling to the seemingly impersonal cookie-cutter interstate highway. Winter is all white. Spring is all green. Summer is...
Summit Trail Some of the easiest hikes in the early season follow low land or follow Badlands ridges. Both have their advantage but we believe the Badlands ridges are at the top of easy hikes. There’s plenty to watch out for when you venture out in the Badlands for a...
Rest Area Ahead When you wander the back roads, you gotta stop from time to time. And so we did, in southwestern North Dakota. If you need a rest that's a little more upscale, try Marmarth. You'll like it. Snapshot Saturday is a glimpse of what's...
The distinctive Snowden Bridge, a vertical lift bridge which spans the Missouri River in Montana, not far from it's entrance into western North Dakota, creates an intense reaction to all who see it for the first time. For some, it's curiosity when they see such a...

It can feel a little bit exciting to be one of the first people who like to hike in to the wild. Those tracks of hiking boots are yours. You’re the only one out here.
It's a snaggin' party! It's like a big rally or family reunion when the paddlefish snaggers get together on the Yellowstone River at Fairview. Right under the Fairview Lift bridge, they spend the day snagging prehistoric paddlefish. The season limit is 1,000...
