What’s as important as fireworks on the Fourth of July? Food! No gathering in the grasslands and badlands of western North Dakota and eastern Montana is without the smell of meat grilling! Add to that a few accompaniments, and you’ve arranged a Cowboy Picnic!
Two favorite cookbooks from the badlands area include the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame Cookbook, from Medora, North Dakota, and A Taste of History Cookbook, from Watford City, North Dakota. They include the following classic recipes, plus many, many more from local residents. You’ll find one additional recipe, from The Slow Roasted Italian, which we love for the Fourth of July.
Meat is where it’s at. Barbecue, outdoor cooking on the Fourth of July, is the traditional way to prepare meat out west, but a crock pot or stove will do as well. Check out these recipes:
Fourth of July Celebrations are sweet! And so dessert should be as well!
A Taste of History Cookbook can be purchased at the Long X Trading Post Visitor Center in Watford City, North Dakota. Phone 701-444-5804 for more information.
North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame Cookbook can be purchased at the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame in Medora, North Dakota. Or order online here: This Is One Great Cookbook! It is also available at the Medora Convention ad Visitors Bureau.
When you are in the Medora area of the badlands, perhaps after a trek in the south unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, or Theodore Roosevelt’s beloved Elkhorn Ranch, where can you go for a great meal, and a refreshing drink, in the Oldest Saloon in western North Dakota? Go Here! Little Missouri Saloon & Dining
What if you’ve been exploring the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, or historic McKenzie County? You’ll love the down home cooking of the Little Missouri Grille, a legendary home-town cafe.
