Water is back in the gorgeous Little Missouri Bay Recreation Area

Update

We wrote earlier this summer that the gem at the Little Missouri Bay Recreation Area near Dunn Center was without water. Back then, conditions were dry, rain was scare, river levels were low, boat ramps were useless.

Even then, though, the campsites were popular.

That changed

The shoreline near the Little Missouri Bay Recreation Area is beautiful badlands hillsides.

Water is back, thanks to all the high water that came down the Yellowstone, Missouri and Little Missouri River last month.

Not only have anglers returned with their boats, but campers are using the area. And, it’s ready. It looks to us like the entire campground is well-maintained. It’s a popular campground as we wrote here back before the site became as popular as it is now.

Mowed.

Cleaned.

And popular.

Campsites are separated enough so RV-ers are not on top of each other.

Boat trailer parking is ample.

The water is accessible to get boaters into the Badlands terrain. It hints at what is under the water, flooded by the man-made lake.

The fragrance of outdoor cooking greeted us when we cruised the roadway through the area.

How To Get The Little Missouri Bay Recreation Area

There are a couple ways, but the easiest to follow is to head north out of Dunn Center on the paved road, and follow the signs.

You can also turn north from Highway 200 on 92 street east of Dunn Center several miles. The gravel road is a straight shot up to the recreation area and hooks to the paved road that leads to the recreation area.
